Hello,

It’s been a while since I blogged about the book club.  It’s still going strong and we have gotten about three new member.  We are reading “Miss Julia stands her ground” by Ann B. Ross.   We enjoy the food and company that the meetings bring.  The next meeting is on March 17th around noon.  Come and join us in the fun.

Storyhour Fun

One of the story hour favorites is to sing the ABC’s. A new twist offered by one of the children is.. “A B C D E F G, wash those germs right off of me.” Silly songs are lots of fun but the fun really starts with Ring Around The Roses 4, 5, 6 times.

Your child will laugh, listen and sing at the library. Join us.

Making them happy makes me happy…

19 people have signed up for the library’s first Book Club!  It has been a great start for the Book Club.  The first book chosen was “Angels & Demons” by Dan Brown (the author of “The Da Vinci Code”).  A light luncheon was held and a lively discussion was had.

We are off to a good start!!!

Our next book will be “Emma’s War” by Deborah Scroggins.

Dr Suess’s Birthday

cat-in-the-hat.doc Come celebrate Dr Seuss’s birthday at the Harry Caudill Library 10:30 Thursday March 6, 2008. We will read Dr Seuss books, play where is Horton’s Whos, Green eggs and ham tic tac toe, make Cat in the Hat Hats, and enjoy birthday cake and ice-cream.

Letcher County Libraries will have summer reading during the months of June and July. The theme this year is Catch The
Reading Bug. Schedule will be posted soon.

This year has been an odd one for winning choices. The Caledcott (an award for picture books) winner this year, went to a book that was over 500 pages long. The Theodore Seuss Geisel Award winning title this year went to a picture book. The honor books were also picture books; this award is normally given for Readers. The content and criteria is withinlimits, it’s just the actual physical format has been different.
We have all of the winning titles as well as many of the honor winners. Come in and see these odd formatchoices for these winners.

THE LIBRARY HAS PURCHASED NEW JUNIOR NON-FICTION INCLUDING A SERIES OF MATH BOOKS ON GRAPHS; RECREATION TITLES INCLUDING FISHING ;AND INFORMATION TITLES ON IMMIGRATION ISSUES. COME CHECK THESE AND OTHER NEW NON-FICTION TITLES.

hugo-cabret.jpgHugo Cabret is an orphan who lives at a Paris Train Station. His job is to set twenty seven clocks pricely and regualry and this was his well kept secret.  Among Hugo’s prized possession is  a notebook full of his father’s drawings which was a present from him on his birthday.  This was his connection to his father and he was passionate in completing and solving the mystery of the drawings.

When the toy store keeper whose store was at the train station catches Hugo for stealing a toy, he is forced to surrender every toy  that was in his pocket including the notebook. Hugo persists in keeping his notebook but the toy keeper refuses to give it back to him, and threatens to burn it  unless he confesses the name of whoever gave it to him.  Both are stubborn and  little did they know that their lives are interlocked.  The mystery deepens and magical events reveal  the lives of these two characters in every page of the book.

This book is enchanting, tender yet unpredictable. The glorious illustrations support the story and captures the essence of every page. This is  a fiction story based on the life of pioneer movie maker, George Milies.

I recommend this book to anyone young or old.  This is a 533 page book, half of which are bold, beautiful illustrations. This book deserves the Caldecott Award Medal and it will not surprise me if it wins the Newbery Award as well. I read this book to my mentally handicapped daughter and she enjoyed it as much as I did.
